you need to pull out the lamp and look to see if it's shattered or if there is obvious damage.
if you have a color wheel problem normally you will hear the bearings making a louder than normal noise. If the color wheel cannot get up to speed, do to bearings, then the ballast never gets the 'lamp on' signal from the DMD board.
The ballast can sometimes be heard if the lamp is pulled out (and the lamp door is back in place to close the interlock switch) if you put your ear near the door. If you hear the arcing noise then you know it's a bad lamp, since the color wheel has to be up to speed, the DMD is giving the 'lamp on' signal to the ballast and the ballast is producing the high voltage to ignite the mercury vapor lamp.
